World Vision Night 2008

This past Friday night we tried to experience a little of what people in poverty stricken countries experience. We pretended that we were from different islands in Indonesia that had recently been devastated by terrible flooding. Most people in our tribe had suffered some type of injury or disability through this disaster, e.g., some tribe members were suffering from hunger and malnutrition so they had to carry a heavy backpack for the rest of the evening, others had witnessed terrible events and were not able to talk because of what they had witnessed, so they had to bandage up their mouth so that they could not talk.

So in these tribes and with these different disabilities we played these games.

Our first game was called 'Earthquake Survivor'. We listened to a story of a yo
ung boy who survived an earthquake, then we had to answer 15 multichoice questions. The tribe with the most correct won. Well done to the tribe that got 14 out of 15 correct!!!

Our second game was called 'Water Source'. This was a relay race where we had to run to the source of water (paddling pool) and wash our feet. At the end of the game
the leaders dared anyone to drink a glass full of the water. (After all that is what people in Indonesia often have to do: wash, cook and drink all in the same water!!)

Our next game made us think about the malaria that a lot of Indonesians tend to suffer from, especially after a disaster. All the leaders were mosquitos that had to sting as many as they could. If tagged we were given a coloured piece of paper. At the end of the game we discovered that anyone stung by a yellow mosquito had got malaria. The tribe with the least amount of malaria won points. But all the tribes had 2 people that had been infected so all tribes got one point.

Following this game we were all given bamboo (straws) and string (tape) and we had to build a shelter as quick as we could, because we heard the news that a typhoon was on its way. Points were given to the tribe that made the strongest shelter. Martin tested how strong the shelter was by causing a typhoon with a piece of cardboard. Well done to the tribe whose shelter stayed up no matter how strong the typhoon winds were.

Next our tribes all came to a tricky challenge. Power poles had come down during the flood and we had to get all our tribe members over an electric wire without any of us being electrocuted.

Our last game for the night was called the 'Food Grab.' Often in a disaster Aid Organisations come with food that needs to be distributed around a lot of people. We had practice collecting food for our tribe. One tribe member was blindfolded, they had to try and find the food item by listening to the directions their tribe yelled to them. They had to achieve this before the other tribes got there.

It sure was a fun evening, but hopefully it made us think a little bit about people in the world that who don't live quite like we do.

Don't Worry Be HAPPY :)

and therefore on Frid night there was lots of smiles at DZ as the theme was Don't Worry, Be Happy :) To our suprise none of you knew who the song was sang by but some of you did know the words. During one of the games you got to hear the song and so we all went home with the message don't worry be happy !
It was great to see you all again and welcome to the ones who were new. We all had a FUN night together. Cotton Ball Vacuum was great to get us all going for the night, well done to the orange team for winning that game. Did you actually win or was it just because all the other teams were dishonest?? never mind we had fun any way.

The other games included the Lolly and Body string. And it was actually that.. a string was threaded throught a clothing item of each youth and then some lollies were threaded on and it was a competition to see which team could thread their lollies through all the items of clothing the fastest.

Monster game was a good laugh and great to use some of your energy before you had to sit down and design a ad for DZ. And well done because all of you made a really neat ad so now the leaders have the hard job of choosing one and this will be displayed in the window at the front so every one knows about DZ.

and the last game to top of the night was pass the mouse trap which was a bit scary really. if the mouse trap went off while you had it or the music stop you had to get up and do a task. Like 50 star jumps, cop a flour shower, eat a raw onion. and well done to all of you who had to get up and do a task!!!

and then we had the wrap up where Martijn talked to us about Happiness and where and how do you find really happiness????? he talked about an example of a wise and very rich man called Kind Solomon , may we all seek the happiness which he had in life. That was not from having all the things we want, having good freinds and having fun but no that was becasuse he had a special relationship with God , which is the only thing which can give us true happiness.

thanks for the fun night together.

luv,
your DropZone leaders.

p.s all the best to all of you who are doing the 40 hour famine this week .

How to be Popular

Happy Birthday to Josh C, Steve and Nicole!! We hope you all had a great day.

Tonight was about being Popular and being Un-Popular. We all feel bad about ourselves sometimes. Don't try to make yourself different just to become Popular. Be who you are unless that brings danger to yourself or others.

We played lots of games: Obstacle Race, Three-Legged Soccer, Prickly Marshmellows, Celebrity Mixer, Sack Race and Ice-Cream Race. A lot of different races.

Three-Legged Soccer, Sack Race and Ice-Cream Race were the favourites of the Night. We used the rest of the Ice-Cream to make cones - something we will repeat sometime in the future.
